How do I know if my clutch is failing?
Your clutch plays a vital role in transferring power from the engine, to your road wheels, allowing you to change gears smoothly, and efficiently. Over time, like any mechanical component, it will wear down, and it is important to recognise when this is happening, before ending up stranded.
One of the most common signs of a failing clutch is clutch slip. This happens when the engine revs increase, but the vehicle doesn’t accelerate as it should. This will usually happen under high engine load. You may accelerate a little bit, but the engine rpm will jump up drastically. Slipping indicates that a part of the clutch system is worn, and requires replacement. This can happen because of a failing release bearing, a worn down clutch friction plate, or a faulty pressure plate.
Another common symptom is difficulty changing gears. If you find it hard to engage gears, or if the gearbox feels stiff or notchy, it could point to clutch wear. This is typically worse when trying to select reverse, and first gear.
A high biting point is another sign. This is where the clutch engages higher up on the pedal travel. As the clutch lining plate wears thin, the bite point moves higher, requiring replacement, or in some cases, adjustment. This is more common on older vehicles.
Unusual noises can also be a warning sign. Grinding or squeaking sounds when pressing or releasing the clutch pedal, may indicate problems with the release bearing, or other components within the gearbox. In some cases, you may even notice a burning smell.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to have your clutch inspected by one of our qualified team.
What causes clutch wear?
Clutch wear is a natural part of vehicle use, but several factors can accelerate how quickly this happens. Understanding these causes can help you extend the life of your clutch, and avoid regular replacement.
One of the primary causes of a clutch wearing out is driving habits. Riding the clutch, which is when you keep your foot partially pressed on the pedal while driving, creates constant friction. This wears down the clutch lining quicker. Also, holding the car on a hill using the clutch instead of the handbrake, can cause excessive heat and wear, if done regularly.
Frequent stop-start driving, driving around towns and busy cities, also increases clutch usage, and increases wear. Each time you engage and disengage the clutch, friction is generated, wearing down key components.
Another factor is heavy loads or towing. Carrying additional weight puts more strain on the clutch, requiring it to work harder during everyday driving. This can lead to faster wear on the clutch, and gearbox components.
Mechanical issues can also contribute to clutch wear. Problems such as oil leaks from the engine could end up contaminating the clutch lining plate, causing it to slip. Faulty hydraulic systems, worn cables, or misadjusted components, can also affect clutch life.
By having good driving habits, such as fully releasing the clutch when not in use, and using the handbrake on inclines, you can significantly extend the life of your clutch.
How long does a clutch last?
The lifespan of a clutch can vary widely, depending on the vehicle and driving conditions. On average, a clutch can last anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, but in some cases, it may last significantly longer, or wear out much sooner than this. We have seen some vehicles on 200,000 miles with its original clutch, and we have also seen some vehicles as low as 30,000 miles with the clutch worn out.
Vehicles driven on motorways and open roads tend to experience less clutch wear, as gear changes are less frequent. Cars used for city driving, with frequent stopping and starting, may see the clutch wear out more quickly. Driving habits also play a major role, as aggressive clutch use can wear it out much faster.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my clutch pedal feel soft or spongy?
A soft or spongy clutch pedal is often caused by an issue within the hydraulic system, such as low fluid levels, or a failing master or slave cylinder. It can also indicate a fluid leak within the system. This should be checked promptly, as it can affect your ability to change gears. It is common for both clutch master and slave cylinders to fail. If a slave is located in the gearbox, then it is recommended to change the clutch at the same time.
What happens if the clutch fails completely?
If the clutch fails completely, you may be unable to change gears or move the vehicle at all. In some cases, the car may become stuck in gear, leaving you stranded.
How long does a clutch replacement take?
Clutch replacement is a labour intensive job that typically takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on the vehicle and its design. The process involves removing the gearbox to access the clutch assembly, but it can also include removing the subframe on larger jobs. If your vehicle is a diesel, it is recommended that the dual mass flywheel is replaced at the same time.
Can you service all types of clutches?
Yes, we carry out clutch replacements on a wide range of vehicles. Whether your vehicle uses a traditional clutch or a self adjusting clutch system, a qualified member of our team will be able to assess its condition, and carry out the necessary replacement.
What our happy clients say
Posted on Lois Hillier Absolutely top quality service from the team. I left the house this morning realising we must have had a puncture. I drove round to wing motors only living locally and they without hesitation said they could help. I got a call a couple hours later informing me a tyre replacement was needed and they could do it that afternoon! The cost was as expected and I had my car back by 3pm. I can’t thank them enough as I have a very important journey to do tomorrow and would have been in a very difficult position had it not been for the speedy response of the team. I will not hesitate to recommend you or use your services again!Posted on Daniel Fox Always a good job. Great communication throughout and doesn’t charge the earth.
