How do I know when my tyres need replacing?
Tyres are the most important safety components on your vehicle, and knowing when they need replacing is important for both performance and road safety.
The most obvious indicator is tread depth. Tyres rely on their tread to grip to the road, particularly in wet or slippery conditions. Worn tread significantly increases stopping distances and reduces handling performance. Most tyres feature wear indicators, with small, raised bars within the tread. When the tread reaches the same level as these indicators, it’s a clear sign that replacement is necessary. If you have a tread depth gauge, then the legal limit is 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tyre.
Other signs include visible damage such as cracks, bulges, or cuts in the sidewalls. If a tyre is displaying any visible damage, this can lead to other dangerous issues. Perishing can result in tyres that leak, bulges in tyres can lead to dangerous blowouts, and cuts in side walls down to the cords will cause an MOT failure.
Even if the tread appears sufficient, and the tyre is free of bulges and cuts, tyres that are over 10 years old should be inspected, as the rubber degrades over time, becoming more prone to failure. In some cases, replacement may be advised.
You may also notice vibrations or pulling while driving, which can point to uneven wear, internal tyre damage, or a balancing issue.
How do I know what tyres are right for my car?
Selecting the right tyres is about more than just replacing worn ones; it ensures your vehicle is safe. You should check the sidewall of the tyre for the manufacturer-recommended tyre size, load index, and speed rating. These specifications are designed to ensure your tyres can safely carry the weight of your car, and handle its maximum vehicle speed.
The next thing to consider is the type of driving you do. If you mostly drive in warm, dry conditions, summer tyres are probably the best fit for you. Winter tyres are essential for icy or snowy roads, but not good for hot conditions. All-season tyres offer a compromise for varying conditions, but may not match the performance of dedicated summer or winter tyres.
You should also consider comfort and performance. High-performance tyres offer superior grip, making them suitable for fast and large vehicles, while standard tyres prioritise comfort, fuel efficiency, and longevity. If you are unsure, our team is happy to offer advice on replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can tyres expire even if the tread is fine?
Yes, tyres can become unsafe even if the tread meets the legal requirement. Rubber naturally degrades over time due to heat and environmental conditions, which can lead to cracks. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 6–10 years, regardless of tread depth, to maintain safety.
What is the legal minimum tread depth?
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. However, it’s recommended to replace tyres at around 2-3mm for optimal wet-weather grip. Driving below the legal minimum tread depth can result in police-issued fines and points on your licence.
Why are my tyres wearing unevenly?
Uneven tyre wear is usually caused by wheel misalignment, suspension issues, or incorrect tyre pressure. Worn suspension components, wheel misalignment, and underinflation causes edge wear, and overinflation can cause the centre tread to wear faster.
Can a punctured tyre be repaired?
Many punctures can be safely repaired, particularly those in the middle tread area of the tyre. Sidewall damage or large cuts require tyre replacement.
How do premium tyres differ from standard tyres?
Premium tyres use tread designs to deliver better grip and durability compared to standard tyres. They often improve fuel efficiency, and reduce road noise. Whilst they cost more upfront, they can offer longer life and enhanced safety, especially on high performance vehicles.
Can tyres affect stopping distance?
Yes, tyres play a critical role in braking performance. Worn tyres reduce grip, increasing stopping distances, and the risk of skidding. Maintaining proper tread depth and tyre inflation ensures safe stopping distances.
What our happy clients say
Posted on Lois Hillier Absolutely top quality service from the team. I left the house this morning realising we must have had a puncture. I drove round to wing motors only living locally and they without hesitation said they could help. I got a call a couple hours later informing me a tyre replacement was needed and they could do it that afternoon! The cost was as expected and I had my car back by 3pm. I can’t thank them enough as I have a very important journey to do tomorrow and would have been in a very difficult position had it not been for the speedy response of the team. I will not hesitate to recommend you or use your services again!Posted on Daniel Fox Always a good job. Great communication throughout and doesn’t charge the earth.
